Housing Support
In addition to assisting many people living in housing precarity or homeless to find shelter or in a few cases, actual housing, the Old School staff worked with the Department of Community Services, the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia and the federal Reaching Home program to provide a winter shelter for 5+ people to have full services from the end of January into the new fiscal year. We also worked in partnership with the Parish of St. John of the Cross to receive funding to renovate the former St. Philip Neri church in readiness for emergency shelter needs that we all understood are essential. Renovations are now complete and the Musqui Cafe will be transitioning to the church space in July 2024.
We are grateful to the United Way for their ongoing contributions for our community members via the funding we receive for supports to individuals and families experiencing housing challenges.
Homes within Reach
We continued to have meetings and discussions with a number of housing organizations to secure funding to go to the next steps of land acquisition and construction of 12-24 units of passive solar design, deeply affordable housing. While the barriers continue to be a challenge, we hope that a Housing Task Force can undertake the full press that is needed to get to new housing in the Harbour area.
